Thanking the Craigs

Filed under: Uncategorized — sunyprof @ 2:32 pm

Dear Teachers,

Today I put a check for $200 in the mail to David and Lisa Craig earmarked for Corey’s endowment at SUNY Upstate. Our contribution is a generous one I think. Thank you.

Here is the body of the letter I sent. I also sent the card we all signed of course.

Dear Lisa and David,

I’m sorry this thank you has been such a long time coming. I was away at a conference the week after we met with you and we’ve been collecting our donation to the endowment fund you’re setting up in the last two classes.

I can tell you from all of my students and myself that our visit with you was the best class of our semester. Our night with you was an unforgettable one for my students. Your courage in being willing to speak with us is remarkable and your work on Corey’s behalf to bring the issue of teens at risk of suicide to everyone’s attention has left an indelible mark on everyone who knows you. We feel lucky to now be members of that circle of friends.

Please accept this donation for the endowment on behalf of my Young Adult Literature class:

Erin Bowman*
Joyce Hansen
Kari Redmond
Erica Brazee
Mandy McKenney
Raph Tombasco
Jessica Exter
Sarah Ostrom
Josh Williams
Kate Frazer
Allison Porzio
Jon Wolfe

With love and gratitude for coming to Cortland,

Karen Stearns
Assistant Professor
English/Adolescence English Education
SUNY Cortland

*These names were listed alphabetically in 3 columns on the letter. That spacing doesn’t work here thus the list.

  1. Thank you again, Karen, for putting this together. I’ll take this experience with me, as I continue on.

  2. Karen,
That letter sounds perfect. Thanks for including this in our semester’s work. What a pleasure to get to meet the Craig’s in person and have them share their story with us. Glad we could do something in return for the gift they gave to us.

  3. Thank you, Karen. Meeting the Craigs was an experience that will stay with me forever. It reached me on many different levels, not just as a teacher, but as a mother, daughter, sister, friend, classmate and human being as well.
