  1. Sticks and stones?

    I don’t think so.

How much are teachers criticized for their work? And now we have to deal with libelous campaigns? Wrought by the very gray matter we’re trying to improve? Are we insane? If I were having any doubts about being a teacher, this story would pretty much send me out of the program, screaming.

Things have come a long way since cartoon drawings of substitute teachers on spiral bound notebook paper. Things have come a long way since I was once called a “dirty worm” by said substitute for READING a classmate’s artwork.

Students feeling critical about their instruction isn’t new. The internet, however, provides young people with an outlet for their frustrations that reaches well beyond a classroom waste basket. (Filled with the crumpled up caricature of a moment’s broken heart.)

How can we impress upon students the global reach of their ephemeral burn? To what extent are they able to grasp the community of unknown implication that will follow their resentful musings?

How, as language arts teachers, are we able to show them the power of language? Because if ANYone can, isn’t it us?

Suprising how the parents and administrators are afraid of their own students. Is it because they don’t want to be FACEbooked?

  2. This is a brave new world indeed. Are these students older versions of the 3rd graders who plotted to murder their
teacher? Sometimes it feels like we are living in the type of science fiction that we read. Ultimately, we will
need to radically change the structure of schools so that they resemble real communities: where the voices of both
students and teachers are heard, respected, and considered. Until then, frustration, agression, and violence will continue to reek havoc on our schools.
