Sarah Byrnes

I just finished STAYING FAT, and this is the first book I’ve read in a while that actually evoked tears.

After finishing, I’m wondering how (any) author maintains the integrity of a subject without being exploitative of content. I think Crutcher did an good job with this novel in terms of keeping it from becoming insensitive/exploiting Sarah and her situation.

How could we use this text as a bridge in our classrooms toward discussing violence in a country where our students are being inundated with violent behavioral norms (in television, cinema, video games?)
