Dairy Queen

Filed under: Look What I'm Reading for Book Club! — kariredmond @ 5:51 pm

Hey all!

The book that I am working on this week for book club is called Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock. I honestly wasn’t interested by the book after reading the back cover, but I have some friends who grew up on dairy farms and I am a “horse nerd” so I thought I should give it a try. Besides, the lady at B&N wasn’t going to let me walk out of there without buying it, I think! I have to say that even though I have just started reading it, I am impressed by D.J., the 15-year-old girl that is running her family’s farm after her father is injured.  She is tough, stubborn, and proud but I think that she is very relatable.  The idea of a rural setting being compromised by Brian (a lazy, critical football player from the rival high school) is intriguing and her narrative on her situation is enough to keep me reading.   Brian really makes D.J. take a step back and evaluate her own situation, and abruptly interrupts her outlook on life.  So far it is a great read but I will keep you updated!

  2. I’m looking forward to hearing how you like this book, Kari. I haven’t read a lot of YA lit about rural experiences, so I’m interested in checking this one out. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks Karen I will check them both out when I am done! Sarah, you are welcome to borrow it when I am done if you want. Just let me know in class on thursday… I think Erin has your copy of Maus and I want to borrow that so perhaps we could do a teensy trade! 🙂

  7. I hate to disapoint but I doubt I will have finished Dairy Queen by class- sorry! I will try my best to sneak-read at work tomorrow to get it done but I cannot promise anything at this point! Again, I’m sorry! (And after reading this thread I realized I offered the book to both Mandy and Sarah, perhaps I am too excited about sharing and I have overbooked my book!) Ok I am getting punchy 🙂

  8. I finished Dairy Queen Thursday night and I LOVED it! I know I discussed the book with some of you in last week’s book club, but it just continued to get better and better as I came closer to completion. The sequel is automatically added to my summer reading list. I will bring it to class on Thurs for someone to borrow!
