Lesesne discussion from 2/7

Last night’s discussion about Lesesne’s writings was familiar to many others that have been held in Karen’s classes, yet equally as captivating and profound. The group and I noted the influence social/physical/emotional development AND one’s past  has on a student’s choice of reading. As educators, we must delve into the minds (i.e. hobbies & interests: music, film, sports) and ask our students what they want to read. Also, we must consider the lives our students go home to, because a child of divorce might react differently to a novel about a broken home than a child of a fulfilling 20-year marriage. In summary, the student should come before the material is chosen as often as possible.




  1. Yes, Jessica, thank you for sharing these notes from yesterday’s discussion about Lesesne. Don’t you love the little author pieces that are spaced among her chapters? If our goal is to encourage as wide and as much reading as possible among our students–because all research shows that the more kids read the better they read–then how has it ever made any sense to “control” and “limit” kids’ reading to the whole class novel?? NO matter how “great” that novel is and by whose standards, how is any adolescent’s reading it contributing to his/her reading development when we know how much quantity counts?? Critical work with ANY text can support kids’ development as readers–absolutely–but that work w/one text cannot ever substitute for adolescents’ reading widely and frequently. KES

  2. I think that this discussion and the readings from this book are very helpful. I really learned a lot about how to figure out what types of books that will work for different types of readers. We all discussed how important it is especially for those who aren’t really into reading, to try to find ways to intrigue them and get them reading! I enjoyed all of the author blurbs between chapters as well.
