Poetry and Meatloaf

Filed under: Look What I'm Reading for Book Club! — katefrazer @ 12:08 am

For this week, I read Shakespeare Bats Cleanup and Middle School is Worse Than Meatloaf.  Both are quick and easy read, but seem to me that they would be of interest to students.  Both of these books are written in non-traditional formats.  Shakespeare is compiled of poems that fourteen year-old Kevin writes while he has mono.  He normally lives for baseball, but spends a lot of time with poetry books while home sick.  As discussing baseball is the most popular and frequent sidetrack in class, I would really like to use this book in my classroom!

Meatloaf is written in notes (both of the notepad and post-it variety), lists, bank statements, report cards, and many other creative forms.  It covers Ginny’s career as a seventh grader and it’s pretty funny.  I think some reluctant girls would enjoy the format of this book.  Kate
